A pocket sized variable power supply that runs from a USB port is being developed. Fully functional prototypes are available with appropriate pledges on Kickstarter.com
According to Brad Hunter, “...power supplies are bulky. They require a regular wall outlet which means typically a 6 foot or longer cord, often a transformer which means both size and weight and they are basically not practical for many of todays circuitry projects. Just walk my favorite isle at the electronics store and you will see prototyping boards, monolithic chips and something I never saw as a kid, microprocessor boards designed for beginners and hackers. Most of the projects today involve simple relays or logic controls that run at a very basic voltage and low amperage. When Mike asked me if I thought a pocket size power supply that ran from a computer USB would be useful, I had one of those 'ah ha' moments. Mike asked several other friends and the reaction was similar. The project began that simply and now we are looking to refine the device and create a fully market ready version by using kickstarter for initial funding. We are offering a specialized version of the unit for pledging and right now that is the only way to get one.”
Often, people who work in electronics need specialized tools for their work. According to Mike Zhao and his associate Brad Hunter, there is a clear void where power supplies are concerned. Brad says “Typically what you find is a typical wall wart style adapter with one output voltage and it may or may not have the needed current to handle the project you are working on.”
The project has raised over $6,500.00 to date. If you have a need for this kind of device, you can pledge $30 on Kickstarter to get one. When asked why Kickstarter, Mike replies, “We wanted to reach a specific community that will use the device. Many users of Kickstarter are also technical people who we feel will appreciate the device. Clearly we have found some.”
Brad and Mike both expressed their enjoyment of the process and intend to produce more products that are affordable and fit a niche. The two men have also collaborated on several other projects, including one in renewable energy.
The re-launched product is on Kickstarter and titled "USB Variable Power Supply for Small Projects - ReLaunch".
