Electronic cigarettes are battery powered electrical devices that enable smokers to simulate the act of smoking cigarettes by tasting or inhaling flavored mist, which often contains nicotine.
Whether you are a smoker looking for a way to cut back or smoke in public places where regular cigarettes are not permitted, or if you are a concerned business owner or member of the public, you probably wonder about electronic cigarettes, which are also called e-cigs. What exactly are electronic cigarettes?
Electronic cigarettes are battery powered electrical devices that enable smokers to simulate the act of smoking cigarettes by tasting or inhaling flavored mist, which often contains nicotine. E-cigarettes release a light vapor, which is one reason using them is often referred to as “vaping.”
How Electronic Cigarettes Work
Most electronic cigarettes work in a similar fashion, being self-contained cylindrical devices that outwardly resemble traditional cigarettes – many are even equipped with glowing tips that light up when the user inhales. They use heat or ultrasound to vaporize a solution that is either dripped into the devices or contained in a cartridge; once the solution is heated, it becomes mist that looks much like smoke when it is exhaled.
Many e-cigs are rechargeable, or contain rechargeable battery packs, although some are disposable.
Electronic Cigarette Pros and Cons
People who use electronic cigarettes tend to find them somewhat satisfactory, as they do produce some of the same sensations old-fashioned tobacco cigarettes do. In addition, people who object to traditional cigarette smoking are often surprised to find that there are no objectionable odors left behind by e-cigs; just one reason they are often allowed inside places where cigarettes are now banned.
Many people who are trying to stop smoking regular cigarettes turn to e-cigs as a temporary solution or a kind of smoking cessation device, since the risks associated with using these devices are not nearly so great as the risks associated with smoking traditional cigarettes. Various health authorities vary in their opinions about whether e-cigarettes are beneficial or not, and controlled studies are scarce.
Opponents of electronic cigarettes worry that the devices may come with health risks, and they also worry that the fact that many of the liquids used are flavored could make e-cigs overly appealing to children and non-smokers, exposing them to chemicals that they would otherwise never experience. In addition, opponents worry that safety claims are overstated.
Either way, the risks associated with traditional cigarettes are just not present in e-cigs. There is no actual burning material involved, so there’s no tar, and there is no secondhand smoke involved, either. The only people affected by these devices are those who choose to use them.
