How cold weather affects the performance of LED flashlights

by Elle JoeyJune 26, 2012

This article mainly specializes on the science behind LED flashlight performances especially in cold environment.

There is possibilities of incandescent bulbs will shatter especially in extreme cold. Traditional incandescent work as a result of warming a metal filament until it glows with heat. This is dangerous in a cold environment. Moreover, the difference in the filament a swell as the environment air may lead to breakage of the glass thus shattering the bulb. This is as a result of the glass being unable to conduct heat. On other hands, it is aid that these bulbs expose the user to a lot of dangers.

LED bulb work by shifting atomic charges where a superconductor material glow especially when there is a discrepancy of positive and negative charges. These further states that LED flashlights runs cold and does not glow with heat as incandescent flashlight hence this will not lead to its bulb shattering in cold environments.
When the temperatures drop negatively, this also affects battery performance. It is a fact that heat facilitates most of the chemical reactions. On the other hand, cold temperature will lead to deterioration of most chemical reactions. Most batteries also operate using this rule hence they will not work well on cold temperature. As a matter of fact, LED flashlights users should beware of batteries running out of power faster bellow-freezing temperatures.

For one to solve this problem, they can consider keeping their batteries in their pockets so that they obtain warmth from your body heat. Moreover, one can purchase lithium batteries as they are designated to work from -40 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit.
Many people are now opting for LED flashlight which uses less current because it works for longer period of them ascompared with others sine it does not draw much on taxed batteries. Thus, regardless of one purchasing a low current flashlight, its brightness will still be cut into two during freezing temperatures. Another solution would be going for a capacitor so that it is brought to life when shook for a sell.

In extreme cold weather, one is likely to face leaking as well as battery explosion. For alkaline batteries, its freezing point is about -48 degrees Fahrenheit. In case on finds him/herself in such cold environments, one can consider keeping the batteries inside his/her pockets so that they are warmed by heat from the body.
It is also important for one to look for reliable metal connections in the LED flashlight. If one is fond of using his/her LED flashlight in cold surroundings, it is vital to look into the connectors before making a decision. It is also advisable that one avoid purchasing flashlights with distinctive internal metals as connections. This is as a result of internal metals having distinctive contractions in cold. Moreover, let your LED flashlight have one type of internal metal so that the performance is quality.
